How
I got into Video Game design
I
sometimes get sick to my stomach when I read something about a girl
in the game design field and all she can talk about is how she
grew-up with Mario and she has an intimate relationship with her
DS... blah blah. Whether or not we wanted video games in our life,
the people of my generation all grew up with it... it was a form of
entertainment available to everybody.
What's my story?
I grew up all over Minnesota, raised in different houses with
different family members taking responsibility of me. The only bit of
consistency I had in my life were video games. When I was younger my
grandma dusted off my mom's Atari.
Best
Christmas present ever. (me in the middle)
I'll
never forget the Christmas my siblings and I opened up
a Nintendo Entertainment System. Complete with the
Nintendo Light Gun-- STILL in it's original packaging ;) There were
summers filled with trips to Video Update to rent Sega games
with my grandpa. I have memories of getting excited for the next
demo-discs inside of Playstation magazine or back
when Pizza Hut gave them out. I'll never forget the countless hours
on my Gameboy playing Pokemon-- being stuck in a comped casino hotel
room or dragged to the shopping mall, or on the bus to school. (In
middle school I was known as "The Pokemon Lady" haha). as I
got older and grew a bit out of Pokemon, my brother and I sold our
entire Pokemon collection of cards for a Nintendo 64 bundle
which included one of my all-time favorite games, Goldeneye. At this
point I'd like to personally apologize to any friends I may have lost
in High School when I got a hold of an original Xbox and
discovered Xbox live. People were forgotten, Jobs were lost and then
gotten-again for just as long as it would take to pay for another
year of XBL, and then lost again... and don't even get me started on
my long-term relationship with PC games.
Me
totally NOT playing WoW ;)
So
if you suffered through that long and poorly written paragraph, you
can see that I'm pretty serious about my passion for video games.
I
spent three straight years at Brown College of Minnesota earning my
Bachelor's degree in Video Game Design and Development. After I
graduated, I had an unfortunate run-in with a local game design
"company" that took advantage of my talents. I learned an
excellent lesson about trust and professionalism in the game design
industry from my experience there.
Many
a drunken college weekend spend pwning.
I
now dedicate a large chunk of my free-time to video game design after
that. I am constantly thinking of new ideas for games but I am even
more excited to help other people with their ideas. Lately a
programmer friend of mine and I have been participating in game jams
all over the world! (For those of you who don't know, Game Jams are
usually a timed event in which the creator will sometimes introduce a
theme or an idea for a game. As individuals or groups, we create a
game based on the criteria within the time limit.)
Game
Jams I participated in:

a game in 72 hours that fits the theme "Tiny world"
For
this, Tim and I decided to create a game where you take care of a
tiny fishtank by controlling fish that destroy predator fish. #30 in Graphics out of the 330 Jam games and #63 out of the total 1402 games.

"Quanity
vs quality" create as many games as you can within 48 hours.
We
created 9 simple games for this one. Most of them were just clones or
modifications of simple well-known games. I had a lot of fun coming
up with interesting and fast ways to skin them!
