Planning to be Sweeney Todd or just want to make a sweet prop for decorative purposes but strapped for time or cash!? Making props for your costumes doesn't have to be time consuming or expensive! Check out my sweet tutorial and please show me pictures of how yours turned out :)
Skill Level: beginner to intermediate
Est cost: $15-$20 (even less if you have most of these items already lying around like I did!)
Time: 15-35 mins (give or take for drying times!)
Materials Needed:
- 2 brass fasteners
- Scissors and a paintbrush
- Mod Podge or Elmers glue
- Red acrylic paint
- Black, Silver and clear (optional) spray paint. *you can use acrylic paints if spray painting isnt for you!
- lightweight cardboard or stiff poster board
- glue gun + glue sticks (OR puff paint *but this will take longer!)
- A tool to be able to stab a hole into the poster board
- A printer and my awesome template!
1. Snag my template and print it out! (black and white is fine!) [HERE]
2. Crudely cut out the pieces and glue them to the poster board (let dry for 2+ mins)
3. Plug in your glue gun, and cut out each piece of the template nicely on the lines.
4. Glue the two curve-pieces to the insides of the handle pieces. (this allows room for the blade to slide in!)
5. Carefully add glue/puff paint to the dark parts in the handle graphic. (if you used puff paint, let dry 1-3 hrs)
6. Turn OFF your glue gun, and stab holes in the pieces! (one in the blade, two in each of the handle pieces)
7. paint the handle pieces black (get the sides too!)
8. spray the blade silver, and holding the can at a distance, lightly dust the black blade handle. stick the 2 brass fasteners in the leftover poster board and spray them silver too! (if they're not already silver).
9. after about 10 mins, go back and splatter some red acrylic "blood" to the blade. (adding a bit of water will make it easier to throw paint at it!) Let everything dry completely.
*optional step* after 5ish more minutes, go back and spray everything with crystal clear enamel. I've noticed that things will not only be a bit more protected this way-- but the prop is less likely to have a sticky-feeling to it. AND the blade will look super shiny!
10. after drying-- connect everything together with the brass fasteners and enjoy!
